Coronavirus: 396 new confirmed cases, 12 in Galway

No further deaths related to the coronavirus have been reported today, but 396 new cases have been confirmed.

Twelve of the new cases are in Galway, while almost half of the cases are in Dublin.

In Cork there were 36 additional cases, 19 were confirmed in Donegal, 11 in Meath, 11 in Kildare and nine in Monaghan.

70% of the 396 people with Covid-19 are under the age of 45 and 26% are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case.

Eighty-two people are currently in hospital with the disease, and 17 are in ICU.

Dr Ronan Glynn said that the cases we are reporting today were seeded in the last week.

“This virus spreads from person to person,” he said. “We now have a collective task across the country to break the chains of transmission and stop this virus from spreading further.

“Plan to see half the number of people this week that you saw last week. When you do meet, do so safely – keep your distance, wear a face covering if appropriate and wash your hands.

“Every individual action we take to interrupt the transmission of this disease keeps ourselves and our families safe.”
